COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Children at the Child Development Center repopulated their garden with vegetables and flowers May 22.
The Environmental Division kicked-off the activities with opening remarks and spent time assisting the children during the gardening event.
Every Kindergarten Preparatory student planted at least one seedling under the care of
Environmental Division and
CDC staff. Preschool and toddler classrooms will assist with watering and care during the growing season.
Defense Supply Center Columbus Deputy Site Director Eddy Poprock and Installation’s Executive Officer Michelle Bennett joined the fun, spending time with the children.
Each plant was selected for ease of growing and sensory experience for the children to include sight, touch, smell and taste.
The CDC teachers have created lessons about growing food and water conservation with on-site observations of the progress and rain barrels in the garden that will go hand-and-hand with watering and tending the garden throughout the growing season.
The children will bring their harvest to the cook; who will serve the fresh vegetables and herbs for lunch, when appropriate.
The Eco Helpers CDC Garden Team contributed to the project by assisting with garden preparation.
The garden was vetted by the Defense Logistics Agency’s Industrial Hygienist to ensure safety.
