DLA receives DOD award for exceeding CFC goal in national capital area by 17%

By Beth Reece

The generosity of Defense Logistics Agency employees in the National Capital Area earned the agency the 2020 Combined Federal Campaign Summit Award, which was presented early this month in a virtual ceremony.

Employees contributed $305,468, exceeding the agency’s $260,000 goal by 17%. The number of donors is similar to that of the 2019 campaign, which raised just over $275,000.

“Although the percentage of employees who gave stayed between 10 to 15%, those who gave dug a little deeper,” said Gordon Weiss, who managed DLA’s NCA campaign. “People may have had a little extra to give because they weren’t spending money on commuting back and forth or eating out. The pandemic also caused people to think about what’s really important in life and might have brought out individuals’ generosity.”

DOD employees in the NCA and overseas pledged nearly $10 million, said Thomas Muir, director of Washington Headquarters Service. Although the pandemic forced most campaign events to be held virtually, Muir said it gave agencies the opportunity to collaborate with other organizations and use employees’ creative ideas for engaging potential donors.

Weiss also said energetic support of leaders like DLA Director Navy Vice Adm. Michelle Skubic and DLA Finance Deputy Director Jeff Zottola inspired DLA employees to champion charities and causes that had personal meaning.

“We had a lot of volunteers who had a passion for the power of the campaign and a passion for the power of the federal workforce to help our local communities, the nation and our world,” he added.

In internal recognition, DLA Energy received the Best Campaign Awareness Event Award for its “Race for Relief” 5K run/walk in support of children and family services charities. The same award went to DLA Joint Reserve Force, as well, for its Global Health Awareness Event.

Appreciation certificates will be sent to keyworkers and other volunteers in addition to DLA directorates that achieved 100% of office goals. They include the DLA Joint Reserve Force, DLA Acquisition, the director’s staff, DLA Logistics Operations, DLA Human Resources, DLA Information Operations, DLA Finance and DLA Energy.

The 2021 campaign will be managed by the DLA Joint Reserve Force.
