Manage tires IAW the Demilitarization (DEMIL) Code. The majority of vehicle and/ or aircraft tires are non-DEMIL/Mutilation (MUT) required and may be turned-in to DLA Disposition Services intact. When discussing tire turn-in(s), customers do not need to mutilate tires (e.g., drill a hole through tire, slashing, or cut the sidewall/bead) limiting sales potential. See below for further details:
Usable Non-DEMIL Tires:
Most types of vehicle and aircraft tires are not required to be demilitarized prior to turn-in and may be turned-in to Disposition Services intact. Customers should avoid mutilating serviceable, non-DEMIL required tires.
Non-DEMIL tires are segregated by unit of issue:
- For Assembly (AY) unit of issue, tires are turned-in as-is with a 1348-1a.
- For Each (EA) unit of issue, tires must have the rim removed. Separated rims require an additional 1348-1a. specific for that part.
Unserviceable tires must be turned in as scrap and segregated according to their applicable Scrap Classification Listing (see below). Rims must be removed from unserviceable tires and turned-in with an additional 1348-1a.
DEMIL Required Tires:
Only bullet-proof and run-flat tires with inserts require Demilitarization. (IAW DOD 4160.21M, V4, and DOD 4160.28M V2)
Mutilation is the act of making non- DEMIL required MLI or CCLI unfit for its intended purpose by methods such as cutting, tearing, scratching, crushing, breaking, punching, shearing, burning, or neutralizing, etc.
The below listed categories of tires require mutilation.
- Tires which carry a prohibited disposal instruction, such as SOUM or Safe Alert Latent Defect (SALD), denoting that the tire must be mutilated.
- DEMIL Q include run-flats, wheels, and wheel assemblies.
- DEMIL Q3 include all run-flat inserts, run-flat wheels, wheel assemblies specifically designed for LAV, Stryker, and M1117 vehicles.
Unserviceable tires must be sorted and segregated into their proper Scrap Classification Listing (SCL) prior to turn-in. It is important to note the difference between a scrap tire and other rubber scrap. Do not comingle property within SCLs.
The following SCLs currently apply to tires and scrap rubber:
- G01: Rubber tires, aircraft
- G02: Rubber tires, vehicular
- G05: Rubber scrap not otherwise classifiable
