Defense Logistics Agency Energy bid farewell to Air Force Brig. Gen. Albert Miller during a virtual Change of Command ceremony June 23.

The incoming commander, Air Force Brig. Gen. Jimmy Canlas, joined the organization after commanding the 618th Air Operations Center (Tanker Airlift Control Center), Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. 

“Thank you for your trust and confidence and for the gift of command of DLA Energy, an organization with a mission so critical to our nation’s defense,” Canlas said. “Know that I am fully dedicated to build upon the incredible legacy and work accomplished by General Miller and the entire DLA Energy team.”

Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, each leader was with their families in separate conference rooms at the McNamara Headquarters Complex, Fort Belvoir, Virginia. DLA Director, Army Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams, presided over the ceremony from the DLA Executive Conference Room with his wife and Senior Enlisted Leader Navy Command Master Chief Shaun Brahmsteadt. 

In his remarks, Williams offered his appreciation to Miller for his leadership since September 2019. 

“Thank you for a job well done,” Williams said. “I’m going to say a lot of great things about Al, but the fact of the matter is that his success is synonymous with all of the phenomenal work of the entire DLA Energy team.” 

Miller received the Defense Superior Service Medal for providing “world class support” to customers. The award narrative cites the extensive fuel, electricity, renewable energy and space propellants the agency provided to support Warfighters and federal customers around the world including expanding international fuel agreements with the countries of Saudi Arabia and Peru. 

One of his key accomplishments was improving DLA Energy’s sustainment, restoration and modernization fuels infrastructure investment program. During his tenure, the program funded 2,255 large projects and 7,326 service orders at 531 different sites across all Military Services extending regulatory inspection intervals from 10 years to the new average of 17 years.

Miller attributed his accomplishments to the DLA Energy workforce. 

“All the great things General Williams said today, all the credit goes to you who work day in and day out to support the Warfighter,” he said. “You are what this ceremony is all about. Commander’s command, but the reality is YOU make it happen.”

Miller’s next assignment is director, KC-46A Enterprise Lead, Air Mobility Command, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Williams welcomed Canlas to the team, acknowledging the experience he brings to the DLA Energy team.

“When I got the opportunity to review the officer coming to DLA, I was ecstatic when I read through his credentials,” Williams said. “I am 100% confident that Brig. Gen. Jimmy Canlas will climb aboard this very fast-moving Energy moving train and not skip a beat.” 

Canlas said he is excited and honored to be the Commander and is looking forward to meeting the team. 

“We will strive daily to turn the bad in to good, the good in to great, and make the great enduring,” Canlas said. “General Miller bragged about our world-class team of professionals full of gold medal performers. My pledge is to bring my best each and every day to enable your success and to ensure our team members can reach their full potential.”
