How To Use PUB LOG® to Find National Stock Number Information

Purpose: To provide guidance on how to use the PUB LOG® System to find a National Stock Number's (NSN) data. Guidance is set forth for the Classic 64-bit and newer IMD2 version.

Introductory Information

 PUB LOG® does not automatically refresh when new data is released each month. The user is recommended to delete the older install and re-install the newer PUB LOG® package every month found on PUB LOG® - Public Logistics Data.

Ensure PUB LOG®  is installed and ready for use. For more information, see How To Install PUB LOG® System.

The PUB LOG®  application comes in two versions: Classic 64-Bit (PUB LOG®) or IMD2 (NEW - PUB LOG®)

The two versions of Pub Log available to be downloaded are the Classic 64-Bit one called PUBLOG and the newer IMD2 version called NEW - PUBLOG.

How to know which version is being used?

When opening the Classic 64-Bit (PUB LOG®) version, the home screen will be titled "IMD Quick Search version X.X.X. (64-bit)."

Searching for NSN Information with Classic Version (64-bit)

Open the classic PUB LOG® version (64-bit).

Note: Ensure the circle on the left side of the Product Name PUB LOG® is green. If it is red, select Browse and then click on the file location where the extracted PUB LOG® files are housed.

  1. Select the Search Interactive button.
    In Pub Log Classic 64-bit home screen, to start the item search process the user needs to select the Search Interactive Button.

  2. When the "Interactive Query" screen appears, users can search with either:
    • Find It search bar - searches all fields. Use this option when you are unsure what type of data you have.

    • FLIS Interactive Query tabs to filter data (i.e., FLIS, CHAR, etc.).

    How to Use PUB LOG
    In Pub Log Classic 64-bit a user has the ability to select different filter tabs on how they want to search for items. After selecting the appropriate Interactive Querying tab the user enters search information into appropriate fields and then selects the Search button.

    Each tab has different data fields for a NSN to be filtered/searched through. Only one field in a tab is necessary for querying; however, for best results use multiple fields to narrow down search.

    The Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) dataset contains the following fields to search by:

    • NIIN - National Item Identification Number - a nine position numeric number assigned to each approved item identification.
    • FSC - Federal Supply Class - a code which identifies the supply classification of an item identified under the federal cataloging program, an item of production and/or a homogeneous area of commodities in respect to their physical or performance characteristics.
    • INC - Item Name Code - a five position numeric code that is assigned to each approved item name. Non-approved item names are assigned item name code 77777. In accordance with DoD 4100.39-M, volume 10, table 20.
    • ITEM_Name - a thirty-two position alphanumeric or special character name, which establishes a basic concept of the item of supply to which the item belongs (nomenclature of the item).
    • CAGE Code - Supplier's Commercial and Government Entity Code. For more information, see DLA.mil's CAGE Code article.
    • SOS - Source of Supply - a code/military standard requisitioning and issue procedures (MILSTRIP) routing identifier code/which identifies the activity as a potential source of supply used in the automatic digital network to automatically route MILSTRIP requisitions.

    Decoded characteristics data used to describe physical and performance features of an item of supply. This tab contains the following fields to search by:

    • FSC - Federal Supply Class - a code which identifies the supply classification of an item identified under the federal cataloging program, an item of production and/or a homogeneous area of commodities in respect to their physical or performance characteristics.
    • NIIN - National Item Identification Number - a nine position numeric number assigned to each approved item identification.
    • Item_Name - a thirty-two position alphanumeric or special character name, which establishes a basic concept of the item of supply to which the item belongs (nomenclature of the item).
    • Characteristics - data with:
      • Master Requirement Code (MRC): a four position alpha code assigned to each physical or performance characteristics requirement in a Federal Item Identification Guide (FIIG).  
      • Requirements Statement: a 110 position clear text field which gives the requirement statement in straight forward sequence for an assigned Master Requirement Code (MRC).
      • Clear Text Reply: a 999 position clear text field that consists of the entire MRC reply field in clear text (i.e., extra notes or description of item)
    • Medical_Name - any name or description medically designated for the item.
    • Common_Name - any colloquial or ordinary name for the item.

    Data associated with the Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code such as company name, address, and business classification. This tab contains the following fields to search by:
    • CAGE_Code - Supplier's Commercial and Government Entity Code. For more information, see DLA.mil CAGE Code Article.
    • CAGE Status - a code which designates a specific status condition relating to a CAGE/NCAGE code such as the CAGE being active or restricted.
    • Type - a code identifying the applicable type of organizational entity.
    • CAO - Contract Administration Office (CAO): a six position alphanumeric Department of Defense Activity Address Code (DoDAAC).
    • Company - Supplier Name or title
    • City - a thirty-six position alpha field that indicates the city portion of a mailing address.
    • State_Province - state/U.S. possession abbreviation: a two position alpha abbreviation designated by the U.S. Postal Service to identify each state and U.S. possession.
    • Zip_Postal_Zone - zip code: a ten position alphanumeric and special character field that indicates the U.S. Postal Service five digit zip code plus four or the optional code used by foreign countries in place of a zip code.
    • Country - the country portion of the address.

    Data associated with Ammunitions data if applicable to the item. This tab contains the following fields to search by:
    • FSC - Federal Supply Class - a code which identifies the supply classification of an item identified under the federal cataloging program, an item of production and/or a homogeneous area of commodities in respect to their physical or performance characteristics.
    • DODIC - Department of Defense (DoD) Identification Code (DoDIC): a four position alphanumeric code, consisting of a one or two position alpha followed by numerics, which is assigned to the items covered by the generic descriptions.
    • DODAC - Department of Defense (DoD) Ammunition Code (DoDAC): a nine position alphanumeric code. The first four positions are numeric and represent the Federal Supply Class (FSC) assigned to the approved item name. The fifth position is a hyphen. The last four positions may be one or two position alpha followed by numerics and represent the ammunition code assigned to the items covered by generic descriptions.
    • Item_Name - a thirty-two position alphanumeric or special character name, which establishes a basic concept of the item of supply to which the item belongs (nomenclature of the item).

    Data associated CAGE information. This tab contains the following fields to search by:
    • Association_CAGE - Association code: a five position alphanumeric code assigned by the program manager to identify the corporate complex entity and all related sub-entities that comprise a corporate complex. The association code is used in item identification screening operations to determine actual or possible duplicate items when the reference number is the same but the CAGE code is different.
    • CAGE_Code - Supplier's Commercial and Government Entity Code. For more information, see DLA.mil's CAGE Code article.
    • Company - company name: a thirty-six position alphanumeric and special character field that indicates the Supplier name (Supplier Name or title).
    • State - state/U.S. possession abbreviation: a two position alpha abbreviation designated by the U.S. Postal Service to identify each state and U.S. possession.
    • ZIP - zip code: a ten position alphanumeric and special character field that indicates the U.S. Postal Service five digit zip code plus four or the optional code used by foreign countries in place of a zip code.

    • INC - Item Name Code - a five position numeric code that is assigned to each approved item name. Non-approved item names are assigned item name code 77777.

    • FSC - Federal Supply Class - a code which identifies the supply classification of an item identified under the federal cataloging program, an item of production and/or a homogeneous area of commodities in respect to their physical or performance characteristics.
    • IMM - Integrated Materiel Manager (IMM): a two position alphanumeric code that indicates the materiel manager responsible for the execution of assigned materiel management functions for selected items or selected Federal Supply Classes.

    • NIIN - National Item Identification Number - a nine position numeric number assigned to each approved item identification.
    • Part_Number - part number: a thirty-two position alphanumeric or special character code that identifies an item of supply.
    • ITEM_Name - a thirty-two position alphanumeric or special character name, which establishes a basic concept of the item of supply to which the item belongs (nomenclature of the item).
    • INC - Item Name Code - a five position numeric code that is assigned to each approved item name. Non-approved item names are assigned item name code 77777.
    • FSC - Federal Supply Class - a code which identifies the supply classification of an item identified under the federal cataloging program, an item of production and/or a homogeneous area of commodities in respect to their physical or performance characteristics.
    • CAGE_Code - Supplier's Commercial and Government Entity Code. For more information, see DLA.mil's CAGE Code article.

    With Structured Querying Language (SQL), users are able to make SQL commands to extract data from Public FLIS system. It is recommended that only those familiar with SQL use this filter.

  3. Select Search.

  4. Review all National Stock Numbers (NSNs) relating to the searched information (e.g., NSNs that have Screw in the item name).
  5. Select an NSN.
  6. Select the View(s) button.

  7. Review the information represented under each tab type.

    Note: When reviewing column information, click on the blue column header link to find descriptions for each data field available.
    In Pub Log Classic 64-bit a user can select any of the item's data in the following different tabs:  Identification, Management, MOE Rule, Reference, Freight Packaging, Characteristics, and TIR (Total Item Record).

Phrase data (phrase codes/data that are assigned to a series of phrases) is used in the management data to indicate changes and/or relationships between National Stock Numbers (NSNs) and information type data.

Searching for NSN Information with IMD2 Version

Open IMD2 version of PUB LOG®.

  1. Confirm the data category you want to search. The available categories match those in the classic version:
    • FLIS
    • CHAR
    • CAGE
    • H2
    • H3
    • H5
    • H6
    • History
  2. Enter the search term and select the Search button (). This will search all fields relevant to the dropdown option selected.
    Note: FLIS is the default dropdown option that can be changed.
    In Pub Log IMD2 Version homescreen the user selects which search filter they want to use by selecting an option in the dropdown and then entering a search term.

    To provide greater specificity in search results, a user can utilize the advanced search feature to see the searchable field options (e.g., NIIN, FSC, INC, ITEM_NAME, etc.) under the dropdown (whether FLIS, CHAR, CAGE, etc.).
     

    1. Select the hamburger menu to the right of the search bar.
    2. Select Advanced Search from the dropdown options.

  3. Review all National Stock Numbers (NSNs) related to the searched information. Review an NSN's FLIS information by selecting a NIIN (National Item Identification Number).

  4. The same FLIS data sections that are available in the classic 64-bit version can be viewed in expandable sections, with the exception of TIR:

    • Identification
    • Management
    • Moe_Rule
    • Reference
    • Freight_Packaging
    • Characteristics

Tip: Expanding all collapsed sections in IMD2 Item View is the same as reviewing all information in TIR tab view within Classic PUB LOG® 64-bit.

Understanding Data Code and Header Names

To view details relating to the codes or column names in the result tables, select the term and review the pop-up for additional information.

IMD2 also offers users the option to view the literal descriptions instead of the codes. By default, IMD2 provides the descriptive codes. To change this view option:

  1. Select the hamburger menu icon beside the date.
  2. Select the Context Help menu option.
  3. Select one of the desired Context Help settings:
    • Codes
    • Literals (descriptions)
    • Codes and Literals together
