DLA Distribution celebrates the Marine Corps 243rd birthday

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — DLA Distribution employees gathered to wish a collective “Happy Birthday” to the U.S. Marine Corps Nov. 8, in honor of the its 243rd birthday. Paul Smith, DLA Distribution Current Operations served as the master of ceremonies for the event.

Visit to site of key World War I victory prompts reflection, appreciation

Nov. 11, 2018, marks not only Veterans Day but also the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I. Members of the DLA Europe and Africa Enterprise team recently visited the sites of the St. Mihiel Offensive — a key moment in the history of Europe and of the U.S. Army.

DLA team marks Memorial Day in visit to WWI commemoration in France

Over the Memorial Day weekend, a group from DLA Europe and Africa traveled to Château-Thierry, France, to participate in the World War I Centennial Commemoration at the Aisne-Marne Cemetery.

The modified B-29 Superfortress named the Enola Gay dropped the first bomb, called Little Boy, on Hiroshima August 6, 1945. Another B-29, Bockscar, dropped the second bomb, called Fat Man, on Nagasaki three days later. Enola Gay can be viewed at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Hampton, Virginia.

Airworthy Heritage

Richmond, Va. — Military aviation is about a century old, and for most of those decades, it didn’t have DLA Aviation to rely on.

The B-29 Superfortress, B-17 Flying Fortress and B-52 Stratofortress appear at the 2017 Barksdale Air Force Base Airshow, Bossier City, Louisiana. Held for the first time in 1933, the Barksdale Air Force Base Air Show is a full weekend event showcases displays of the latest as well as historical military and civilian aircraft.

African Americans have fought enemies seen and unseen, a former NFL linebacker told McNamara Headquarters Complex employees during a Black History Month observance Feb. 21.

Soaring Surplus

Fort Belvoir, Virginia — In the years following World War I, surplus in the form of the Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” helped two aviation pioneers get their start.

Defense Logistics Agency Aviation’s Col. Mark Hirschinger, chief, Army Customer Facing Division, Customer Operations Directorate, cuts the Army birthday cake June 13, 2017 with Sgt. Tom Katsiyiannis, 392nd Army Band, Fort Lee, Virginia, at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia. The cake ceremony is a long standing Army tradition where the soldier with longest time in service cuts the cake with the soldier with the least amount of time in service using the ceremonial military saber.

DLA celebrates the Army’s 242nd birthday!

Richmond, Virginia — Soldiers and Defense Logistics Agency Aviation employees celebrated the Army’s 242nd birthday with a ceremony at Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia.

Army Sgt. Leon H. Bell in 1919, after returning from World War I, at the home of his half-sister Lassie and brother-in-law, F.E. Carroll, Park Street, Beaumont, Texas. The U.S. Army continued to issue this uniform into the early days of World War II. DLA Troop Support now supplies all uniforms to U.S. military service members.
