Command Sgt. Maj., U.S. Army, Senior Enlisted Leader
Army Command Sgt. Maj. Charles Tobin became the Senior Enlisted Leader of the Defense Logistics Agency in May 2015.
Tobin, a native of Samoa, entered active duty in October 1983. He attended Basic Training and Advanced Individual Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Tobin’s first assignment was in the 82nd Airborne Division. He left the Army for one year in October 1986 before enlisting again in October 1987. Upon his return, Tobin was assigned to the Federal Republic of Germany. He returned to the continental United States and was assigned to the National Training Center at Fort Irwin, California. Prior to joining the Defense Logistics Agency, he was assigned to the 8th Theater Sustainment Command in Hawaii.
Additional assignments include: Division Support Command, 82nd Airborne Division; 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, South Korea; 82nd Forward Support Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division; 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Division Support Command, 1st Armored Division, Germany; 47th Forward Support Battalion, 1st Armored Division, Germany; Headquarters Commandant, European Command, Germany; 377th Theater Sustainment Command, New Orleans, Louisiana; 528th Sustainment Brigade (Special Operations) (Airborne), Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and COMISAF, Advisory and Assistance Team, Senior Enlisted Advisor, Kabul, Afghanistan; 1st Theater Sustainment Command, Fort Bragg, North Carolina. During his career, Tobin has served in every Noncommissioned Officer leadership position, from squad leader to command sergeant major. He has participated in contingencies such as Operation Uphold Democracy, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
Tobin’s military and civilian education consists of all levels of Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education, the First Sergeants Course, the Sergeants Major Academy, the Force Management Course, the Keystone Leader Course, the Inspector General Course, the Battle Staff Course, the Jumpmaster Course, Basic Airborne School, and Air Assault School. Tobin holds a master of arts in management from Webster University.
His awards and decorations include Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, the Bronze Star Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Defense Meritorious Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Jumpmaster Badge and the Air Assault Badge. He is a recipient of the Distinguished Order of Saint Martin for the Quartermaster Regiment and he is also a recipient of the General Brehon B. Somervell Medal of Excellence.
