Celebrating the Comeback of the Burning River, 1969-2019

To many, the Cuyahoga River fire on June 22, 1969 represents a turning point for environmental regulation. This river caught the attention of a nation due to excessive water pollution. Certainly not the worst, it was thrust to the forefront as a symbol of environmental degradation. With the formation of the U.S. EPA in 1970 and passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, changes were in store for all waterways in the United States. In addition to the Clean Water Act, the Cuyahoga River was one of 43 Areas of Concern identified by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. These programs and regulations were focused on improving the lives of those both in and near the water. Now 50 years later, how is this river doing in its recovery “fueled” by local, state and federal partners?

DLA Land and Maritime inducts four honorees into its 2019 Hall of Fame Class

DLA Land and Maritime inducted four new members into its Hall of Fame during a ceremony held May 30 in DSCC’s building 20 auditorium. The induction marked the 15th anniversary of the DLA Land and Maritime event. The HOF ceremony celebrates former Land and Maritime associates who significantly contributed to the Warfighter support mission, while also demonstrating a positive impact on the organization’s people, growth and efficiency.

The next generation learns about DLA

Kids got to see first-hand how DLA Land and Maritime associates often have to adapt to changing requirements when the weather required other plans for Take Your Kid to Work Day activities April 25. DLA Land and Maritime associates and their children gathered in the auditorium, many were excited to be on the installation for the first time, others curious as to what happens at their parents or grandparents work place, but a consensus from all were they were happier to be here with their loved ones rather than at school.

From poverty to public service: Franklin County commissioner delivers keynote address at Black History Month program

Franklin County Commissioner Kevin Boyce delivered the keynote address at the Defense Supply Center Columbus’ African American and Black History Month celebration Feb. 27. Boyce became the county’s first black commissioner when he was sworn into office in 2017. In a robust presentation to the military and civilian audience, Boyce reflected on the impact of African Americans throughout American history and shared personal stories from his own life.

DSCC honors King by remembering his dream

DSCC associates gathered to remember the past, celebrate the victories and were reminded to carry on the actions for the future during the Jan. 16 program honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “It’s inspiring that we reflect earnestly on the ideals of diversity, tolerance and equality that he lived his life by,” said Ketchum as she introduced the keynote speaker, Chenelle Jones, Franklin University’s lead faculty for the Criminal Justice Administration.

DSCC associate saves life on commute home

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time,” but these words couldn’t be truer for Daniel McCombs. It was dark outside and he was focused on ensuring the safety of the witnesses. This is when he noticed the car on flames and heard someone was still inside, he immediately went into response mode – trying to figure out how to save the driver.

The Defense Federal Community celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

The Defense Supply Center Columbus’ Equal Employment Opportunity Hispanic Employment Program joined in the celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. This month was designated by Congress to celebrate the rich heritage and cultural diversity that Hispanic Americans have contributed to the United States of America. This year’s theme was ‘Resilient and Ready.’
