Family Advocacy and MWR Susquehanna bring awareness to Domestic Violence with Run/Walk event

By Diana Dawa DLA Distribution Public Affairs

October is Domestic Violence Awareness month. The Family Advocacy Program and the MWR Susquehanna Sports and Fitness Department helped raise awareness of domestic violence by hosting a 5K Fun Run/1-Mile Walk here Oct. 17, at the Fitness Center.

The 2018 Domestic Violence Prevention Month campaign message is “Know the Signs" and aims at supporting and strengthening healthy relationships and preventing domestic violence.

The event began with participant registration, followed by opening remarks given by Rob Montefour, site director, DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania.

He focused on prevention, and ideas identified in the DVAM memorandum that he signed and released.  He also emphasized the resources available through the Family Advocacy Program and encouraged everyone to make use of them.

“We all have a responsibility to prevent domestic violence and build a safe, healthy community. Thank you for joining me in this effort by recognizing the signs, respecting love of self and others, and learning about what makes relationships stronger and healthier,” said Montefour

Ann Walker, manager, Family Advocacy Program, coordinated and organized the event.

“The Family Advocacy Program can be a primary resource for spouses and intimate partners who are seeking support and skill building. Free and confidential help is available,” said Walker, adding, “If you are affected in any way by domestic violence, the FAP can assist you by providing resources and referrals.

Event participants wore purple to show their support and used this as their opportunity to get involved, take a stand against domestic violence, and express their solidarity with survivors of domestic violence and their families.

Throughout the month of October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month campaigns are executed to reach people as early as possible in the relationship cycle and invite them to consider whether their relationship can be considered healthy, unhealthy or abusive.
