NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. –
Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Sigonella, Italy moved a total of 10,300 pounds of material in support of Navy ships that are operating as part of NATO exercise Vigilance Activity Neptune Strike 2022.
The exercise, conceptualized in 2020, is designed to teach commanders and all involved NATO parties the complexities of handing over command and control of a carrier strike group to NATO.
“The capability of Sixth Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO combined staffs to enable a handover of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group demonstrates the power and cohesiveness of our maritime forces and the NATO Alliance,” said Vice Adm. Gene Black, commander, Sixth Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO. DDSI moved material by land, sea and air to Navy ships on Jan. 21 in support of the exercise starting only three days later. Material delivered during the resupply visit in Augusta Bay would later make its way to the USS Harry S. Truman by way of air lift for resupply at sea.
The USS Harry S Truman is the first U.S. Navy carrier to officially come under NATO command since the cold war.
