Susquehanna installation military help local community have a happy Thanksgiving

By Jessica Roman DLA Distribution Public Affairs

For many local community members, a Thanksgiving meal can be difficult to afford.  On Nov. 20, military members and their spouses stationed at Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna helped the West Shore Senior Center provide meals to those in need.

The West Shore Senior Center opens a food bank once per month, and for November, offered a special meal including a turkey to help community members.  The food bank is staffed by volunteers from local churches, civic organizations, and others who would like to lend a hand.

This month, Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna members, including Defense Logistics Agency Distribution commander Army Brig. Gen. Richard Dix, volunteered their time to help people fill carts.  The team also loaded and delivered meals to local shut-ins who would otherwise be unable to have a Thanksgiving meal.

“General Dix’s staff is awesome – this is the smoothest delivery we have ever had,” said Tanya Seidel, the director of the food bank.

Much of the food provided by the bank is donated by local grocers and churches.  The food bank also makes special purchases with donated funds through the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.

“We are so appreciative for each and every one who came and helped out,” said Ed Ulsh, a former director of the food bank who still volunteers.  “I’d like to give special attention to General Dix and his staff for helping us out today.  I want to wish everyone a happy Thanksgiving.”
