VPP safety poster contest winners announced

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs DLA Distribution Public Affairs

To spread the word about Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna's quest for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program star status, employees of Defense Logistics Agency activities in New Cumberland and Mechanicsburg were encouraged to show off their creativity by creating a poster promoting safety.

At a VPP Steering Committee Meeting earlier this month, the following DLA employees were recognized for their participation in the contest:

1st Place- Lisa Hake, DLA Distribution Acquisition Operations;

2nd Place- Travis Motter, DLA Distribution Susquehanna; and

3rd Place- Catherine Wright, DLA Land and Maritime.

Applicants were encouraged to utilize the installation's VPP slogan "If it's not safe, we don't do it!" and/or motto "DLA VPP = Safety Excellence!" and the winner was chosen based on originality, creativity, aesthetics, effectiveness and applicability to safety in the work environment.

“All of the posters submitted are a great way to encourage and remind employees about any current or potential hazards in the workplace and how to report them,” said Jennifer Freeman, VPP Marketing Team champion.

The OSHA management system, centered on VPP, includes hazard prevention and control, management commitment, employee involvement, worksite analysis, and training.

DLA Distribution Susquehanna is the lead for the program at Susquehanna, and is currently pursuing VPP “Star” status at the Susquehanna establishment – which includes 11 different DLA activities at New Cumberland and Susquehanna, Pa.

Two DLA Distribution sites are currently VPP “Star” establishments – Norfolk, Va., and San Joaquin, Calif.  Additional sites are seeking star status in the future.
