NEW CUMBERLAND, Pennsylvania –
On Dec. 10, Defense Logistics Agency Distribution headquarters hosted advanced placement U.S. Government and Politics students from Central York High School to visit a federal workplace and learn about the organization’s world-wide operations.
DLA Distribution’s commander, Army Brig. Gen. Richard Dix, welcomed the students, and helped them understand the career path they might take in order to be successful in the military or as a federal civilian employee.
The students are working on a project this semester to create a business case analysis on how different federal agencies can reduce operating costs. Dix discussed their projects with them, and explained how DLA Distribution uses business case analyses in real-world operations.
The students then received a command brief, highlighting an introduction to logistics, and how DLA interacts with all four branches of the military and other federal agencies. After the command brief, the students discussed internship and career path opportunities with Human Resources.
Travelling to DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pa., the students concluded their visit with a tour of the Department of Defense’s largest warehouse, the Eastern Distribution Center. The tour focused on how a major distribution center operates, and were shown first-hand how the distribution arm of logistics works from customer order to shipment.
Teacher Karen Hudson is a retired Army Reserve lieutenant colonel with almost 30-years of experience. “My last few years of my career I was assigned to DLA Distribution,” she said. “I was on active duty from January 2010 until January 2012, where I deployed for several months to Djibouti, Africa. It was a great experience, and I enjoyed bringing my students to visit such a great organization.”
