Wellness News at DSCC

DSCC associates kick-off the summer with new fitness festival
MWR hosted their rebranded fitness and wellness festival Fit Fest June 6 at the MWR Fitness Center, Swimming Pool and Eagle Eye Golf Course on DSCC. The mission of Fit Fest was to introduce, educate and help associates adopt and maintain a healthy lifestyle to increase general health, resiliency and productivity; reducing physical and mental health risks. The carnival themed event was attended by approximately 500 patrons.

DSCC and the Environmental Division
Nicole Goicochea, lead environmental protection specialist at the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime, spoke with seven preschool and prekindergarten classrooms about the environment April 15. The discussion focused on landfills and why it’s important to reduce the amount of refuse generated.
June 5, 2019 - The environment is a focus for many June observances such as World Environment Day, Nature Photography Day and National Pollinator Week. Environment conservation is an ongoing effort at the Defense Supply Center Columbus.

Children bring their care center to life
Children at the Child Development Center repopulated their garden with vegetables and flowers May 22. The Environmental Division kicked-off the activities with opening remarks and spent time assisting the children during the gardening event. Every Kindergarten Preparatory student planted at least one seedling under the care of Environmental Division and CDC staff.  Preschool and toddler classrooms will assist with watering and care during the growing season.

2019 Shred Day success
The Defense Supply Center Columbus Environmental Division collaborated with Morale, Welfare and Recreation to save 27 cubic yards of paper from entering the local landfill May 15. Shred Day was open to all DSCC associates for personal shredding and employees recycled 13,165 pounds of paper, which is equivalent to 6.5 tons. Additionally, nine cubic yards of cardboard were recycled from environmentally conscious donors. The contract with a qualified shredding company that ensured personal identifiable information security allowed employees to securely dispose of documents with personal information while also ensuring the paper is recycled.

Wellness Council LogoMission

Our mission is to create a forum in which Council Members may share ideas, examine issues or concerns and discuss current topics relating to the effective mitigation of Wellness Council issues and customer support. The Wellness Council will work in conjunction with programs for wellness, promoting awareness, and “holistic wellness.” Members will provide input and suggestions to Command; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR); Health and Safety and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) on possible programs and activities.

Vision

Wellness is much more than simply the absence of sickness. It is optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being, a preventative way of living that reduces-sometimes even eliminates-the need for remedies. Wellness emphasizes personal responsibility for making the life-style choices and self-care decisions that will improve the quality of your life.

Purpose

Promote total wellness at work, at home- for life by:

  • Increased awareness
  • Enhanced existing venues
  • Recommending new opportunities
  • Reach people where they are
  • Support DLA Wellness Initiative
  • Make health and wellness part of the workplace culture
