Employees following the Real ID Act implementation for family members whose only ID is issued by Virginia need to know that the extension issued for Virginia by the Department of Homeland Security expired June 6.  Virginia is one of several states currently non-compliant with the Act. 

However, the state has submitted another request for an extension that is still pending.

Meanwhile, DHS guidance received on June 6 provides non-compliant states with a short grace period.  

“Defense Logistics Agency Installation Support at Richmond’s Police Department will begin enforcing the Act for Virginia license holders and refusing to allow individuals with non-compliant cards unescorted access on Defense Supply Center Richmond starting July 10,” said Thomas Reinard, chief, Security and Emergency Services, DLA Installation Support at Richmond.

All Department of Defense IDs — including the Common Access Card, DoD dependent ID and DoD retiree ID — are already compliant with the Real ID Act. Noncompliant ID can still be used to obtain a CAC or a DoD ID card.

The Real ID Act was prompted by a recommendation in the 9/11 Commission’s final report. It set security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and ID cards and prohibits federal agencies from accepting ID that does not meet those standards.
