In November, we recognize Native Americans and Alaskan Natives prominent accomplishments and contributions to our country during National American Indian Heritage Month observances. Due to the pandemic, we will celebrate Native American Heritage Month by sharing informative articles in the DLA and DFAS daily bulletins and websites.

Navy once again comes out on top at the second annual Navy Birthday COVATTA

Out of a field of 10 hand built and meticulously decorated boats, Don E’s Revenge, owned by Navy Cmdr. Eric McCandless, blew out the competition and emerged victorious, an improvement on his second place finish last year. Some of his competitors came close but he was sure it was certain modifications that thwarted all others in the field that day in the second annual COVATTA, a abridged version of the annual regatta staged at the Eagle Eye Golf Course pond pre-COVID. The COVATTA was part of the 246th Navy Birthday celebration at Defense Supply Center Columbus.

DLA Land and Maritime Commander visits command detachments

Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Commander Navy Rear Adm. Kristen Fabry moved strategically to reestablish in-person ties with Land and Maritime detachments at the DLA Maritime Norfolk and Portsmouth Naval Shipyard through on-site visits as travel restrictions eased across the Department of Defense. Fabry completed the two-day swing at the end of September before returning to Columbus, Ohio.

Ethics training is often thought of as a dry and boring requirement, but the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s Legal Office livened it up a bit with an interactive hybrid event on Oct. 7 featuring a panel of Land and Maritime leaders from across the enterprise recounting ethical challenges they have faced in their careers.

DSCC firemen make cameo in latest fitness center video

The Defense Supply Center Columbus Morale, Welfare and Recreation Center’s staff have worked tirelessly to stay engaged with customers and develop meaningful content during the COVID-19 pandemic. WOW! Workout Wednesdays launched last month and features short, weekly workout videos that can be combined or repeated to create personalized workouts for any fitness level.

In Afghanistan and Iraq, U.S. soldiers lost lives to roadside bombs. In 2007, the Secretary of Defense made a commitment to Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicles. Former Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Acquisition Executive Milton K. Lewis talks about how he and his team took on the challenge and worked tirelessly to make sure repair parts were available so MRAPs could be maintained and warfighters would be saved.

DLA Land and Maritime Timeline of the Past 60 Years

The Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime based at the Defense Supply Center Columbus has a long history of support to our nation’s forces. The installation was dedicated in 1918 to expedite shipments of supplies to troops serving with the Allied Expeditionary Force in France during World War I.

DLA Land and Maritime employees honored for efforts resulting in conviction in long-running fraud case

The Department of Defense Office of Inspector General’s Defense Criminal Investigative Service honored two Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime employees recently for their efforts in tracking a decades-long scheme by New Orleans businessman Robert Klein to defraud DOD of millions of dollars. The effort to hold Klein accountable was a partnership between DLA Land and Maritime, DCIS, the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Attorney’s Office, who prosecuted the case.

Land and Maritime gains consumable hardware mission

Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime completed a DLA supply chain efficiency initiative by realigning its consumable hardware mission to better support DLA’s customers. The focus of the mission shift requires DLA Aviation and DLA Land and Maritime’s assumption and management of more than 900,000 national stock numbered items divided between the two Major Subordinate Commands.

Rear Adm. Kristen Fabry visited Wright-Patterson Medical Center on Oct. 1 to thank the 88th Medical Group Airmen who provided active duty and civilians at Defense Supply Center Columbus with the COVID-19 vaccine earlier this year.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Since 1981, October has been National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The observance serves to educate communities, individuals, couples and families about the Family Advocacy Program services and other community resources that can help prevent domestic violence, raise awareness of community responsibility, and inform the community of the many ways to report domestic abuse.

Longtime DSCC engineer, installation deputy retires

Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management – Columbus Deputy Site Director Eddy Poprock retired Oct. 1 after 39 years at the Defense Supply Center Columbus. The Lorain, Ohio, native began his federal career shortly after graduating Ohio State University when he took a developmental civil engineering job at DSCC – then known as the Defense Construction Supply Center.
