Excess items avoid landfill to help people in need

Naval Support Activity Bahrain — It took more than luck to complete a long and challenging donation process to provide excess items to Bahrain’s Red Crescent Society, but the charity’s local leaders recently wished good fortune on Defense Logistics Agency employees there for extra efforts from agency employees to provide support.

Agency supports East African relief efforts

Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti — Mozambique is back in the news as Cyclone Kenneth batters the Eastern African nation just six weeks after Cyclone Idai caused an estimated 600 deaths and left many at risk of cholera and without adequate drinking water.

Teamwork recharges disposal process

Thumrait Air Base, Oman — After more than a year, lead acid batteries used to support U.S. operations in Oman are being disposed of again thanks to new capabilities there and teamwork between two of the Defense Logistics Agency’s major subordinate commands.

Small sites provide big support shipping excess property to new users

Blue Grass Amy Depot, Kentucky — Like the popular 2001 Army recruiting slogan, Disposal Support Representative William Thompson must see himself as “an army of one” as he serves multiple locations from his one-person DLA Disposition Services site at Blue Grass Army Depot, Kentucky.

What is this? A Naval Air Station Patuxent River anechoic chamber from the 1960s – enclosing a space so quiet that the decibel level inside is measured in the negative range – just one of thousands of outdated or unneeded items DLA expects to receive from the U.S. Navy during the course of its mammoth upcoming equipment divestiture project.

NAS PATUXENT RIVER, Md. — DLA disposal reps are helping the U.S. Navy create a property divestiture playbook for its upcoming "Materiel Clean Sweep."

Agency rallies to support Navy’s critical part need

Warner Robins, Georgia — Two major subordinate commands of the Defense Logistics Agency worked together quickly when the Navy called for help acquiring critical aviation parts

Stranded hospital staff and family members are loaded into a former military truck to be transported home, away from flood waters in Fremont, Nebraska. After the emergency is over the truck will be converted for use in firefighting and then issued to a volunteer fire department.

Anson, Texas — A stranded motorist was recently rescued by volunteer firefighters in Texas using a five-ton truck once operated by the military.

A cold day in New York

Ft. Drum, New York — A cold visitor from far north brought work to a halt at the DLA Disposition Services site in upstate New York.

Hurricane Michael created an estimated 15 million pounds of scrap and more than 450 uninhabitable buildings at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. DLA Disposition Services personnel scrap disposal coordination at the installation may last as long as six months.
