Helpful Information
Local Stock Numbers
When using a Local Stock Number (LSN) in place of a National Stock Number (NSN) it is critical to choose the correct LSN from the LSN Master List.
LSNs have assigned Demil Codes which DLA Disposition Services will use to determine their final disposition.
Research Tools
Most items already have an established NSN that should be selected if at all possible. Various research tools are available to determine NSNs based on nomenclature, physical identifiers, part numbers or other available attributes of property needing disposal.
If you are unable to determine an NSN, and choose to use an LSN, please keep the following guidelines in mind.
Commercial off the shelf items need to use a Demil A LSN, items with any military application (that can contain any inherent offensive or defensive capabilities) need to use a Demil D LSN.
Demil A items will be released to the public whereas Demil D items will be sent for Demilitarization.
Critical FSCs
Property that belongs to a Critical Federal Supply Class that is turned in under an LSN requires additional information. Due to national security concerns, the FSCs listed in DOD 4160.21-M, chapter 3, attachment 2, require a higher degree of documentation.
When these items are not assigned an NSN, the DTID must include:
- the appropriate FSC
- valid part number
- manufacturer’s name
- nomenclature that accurately describes the item
- the end item application, and
- a clear text statement explaining why the NSN is not included.
Customers must affirm if the FSC is on the Critical FSC list (DOD 4160.21-M, chapter 3, attachment 2) or the DEMIL code is missing on the 1348-1A. This information may be annotated directly on the DTID or securely attached to the DTID.
