Commentary: Civil defense leads DLA to catastrophe response, whole-of-government support

FORT BELVOIR, Va. — There is a common misconception that DLA became a whole-of-government provider after Hurricane Katrina. While DLA did systemize its catastrophe response following the 2005 destruction of New Orleans, it's been helping the nation react to weather events since the early 1970s.

DLA prepares to act swiftly during hurricane season

Fort Belvoir, VA — Hurricane season runs from the early summer to late fall, but the Defense Logistics Agency prepares year-round to respond to natural disasters. In 2021, DLA provided $40 million in hurricane support, according to the Whole of Government Division. This included 752,000 gallons of fuel, 809,000 meals, 126 leased generators and 49 deployed civilians.

Virginia Wagner, a 13-year Defense Logistics Agency Distribution employee, is a new member of the DLA Distribution Expeditionary Team. Wagner helped the team get on the road to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Incident Staging Base at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama, Aug. 28 in support of relief efforts for Hurricane Dorian.
