Lessons in logistics, leadership, life: reflections of DLA Troop Support’s aide de camp

Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support aide de camp to the commander, Army Captain Martin Hunt, was honored during a promotion ceremony May 2 in Philadelphia. The promotion of an ADC lieutenant to captain also signals a change in assignment. While preparing for his upcoming departure from the ADC role, Hunt shared his reflections and experiences at DLA Troop Support, as captured here by the DLA Troop Support Public Affairs team.

Medical team partners with federal agencies to provide COVID-19 support to island nations

In continued support of the U.S. and international partners’ fight against COVID-19, the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support provided over $800,000 in testing and treatment equipment to the Solomon Islands and American Samoa in April. DLA Troop Support Medical supply chain’s partnerships with the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and Department of Health and Human Services aided in the acquisition and ongoing delivery of more than 39,000 at-home tests and ten oxygen concentrators to help control the spread and effects of COVID-19.

Newly minted CPI Green Belts save time, man-hours with improved Subsistence processes

Continuous process improvement isn’t just a heady concept thrown around by think tanks and executives. It’s a real, painstaking, value-added effort – and it pays off, said Rene King, Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support CPI division chief. Two recent CPI projects completed in the Subsistence supply chain are proof of its effectiveness, with a combined savings of $1.9 million in time and costs.

DLA flu vaccine program attributes success to battle rhythm, partnerships

Thanks to early action and teamwork between Defense Logistics Agency partners, three contracts totaling 3.4 million doses of the influenza vaccine were awarded Feb. 25, meaning DLA will start receiving shipments of the inoculations in August, well ahead of the 2022-2023 flu season. The awards went to three vendors with a total maximum value of $70.4 million and will satisfy the needs of warfighters and eligible dependents around the globe.

Customizable medical kits help modernize USAF deployable assets, provide tailored solutions for warfighters

Air Force health care providers responsible for life-saving operations will soon have access to customizable medical kits provided by the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical team as the agency awarded a $5.4 million contract for 27 kits March 7. The “made-to-order” medical kits includes items such as bandages, gauze, pharmaceuticals, and tracheal tubes as well as a variety of support equipment and cases to house it all. The MTO kits will provide warfighters across the globe support of their unique needs and situations.

Collaborating for success: DLA Troop Support hosts Headquarters National Account Managers to strengthen partnership

Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support hosted the DLA Headquarters National Account Manager team March 3 in Philadelphia where they were able to collaborate in-person and strengthen a partnership that ensures DLA delivers the best warfighter support possible to its customers. National Account Manager teams for the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force stay in contact with logisticians and planners at the Defense Department-level to help align DLA goals with those of service leaders. DLA customer and warfighter support representatives are also co-located with customers at the tactical level to help solve everyday problems like supply shortages and last-minute requirements.

Medical supply chain sweeps DLA Troop Support annual awards

The Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical team is walking a little taller after sweeping the organization’s three major annual award categories in recognition of their support to the nation in 2021. The awards recognized Thomas Heleniak, Medical Tailored Vendor Logistics Specialist, as Employee of the Year; the Operation Allies Welcome/Refuge group as Team of the Year; and Nora Steigerwalt, director of Customer Operations, as the Supervisor of the Year.

DLA Troop Support member, team recognized for excellence

An acquisition specialist with Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical’s National Contracts team and the organization’s J3/5 Operations and Plans Weapon System Readiness Support Branch, were recognized for their accomplishments in fiscal year 2021 fourth quarter. Ryan Ferry was selected as DLA’s Employee of the Quarter and the J3/5 team was recognized for their contributions towards DLA Strategic Goals. The recognition period for the awards was July 1 through Sept. 31, 2021, and award selections were announced Dec. 2021.

Continuous Process Improvement project improves efficiencies, effectiveness of new employees and teams

What are the organizational impacts of new employee onboarding delays, and how can the processes improve? That is exactly the question the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Continuous Process Improvement team asked in 2018, and ultimately answered December 2021. Six projects and a little more than two years later, the impacts are an estimated $2.7 million in cost offsets over a three-year period, and several weeks of productivity per new employee, CPI Branch Chief Maximo Ayala-Ortiz said.
