The Commission on Fire Accreditation International unanimously recommended the department for accreditation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence after a hearing Aug. 9, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Change your clock, change your battery

Richmond, Va. — As we enter the fall season, Daylight Saving Time will end at 2 a.m. this Sunday, Nov. 4. According to a National Fire Protection Association fact sheet for smoke alarms in U. S. home fires, fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate: • almost half (46 percent) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries, • nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms, • dead batteries caused one-quarter (24 percent) of the smoke alarm failures, and • only seven percent of the failures were due to hardwired power source problems, including disconnected smoke alarms.

July is the peak month for grill fires. Roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. The National Fire Protection Association provides free downloadable grilling safety tips on their website at NFPA.org.

Fire Prevention Office provides summer fire safety tips

Richmond, Va. — With the upcoming holidays and being outdoors, the Fire Prevention Office would like to share a few fire safety tips to help you during the upcoming summer season.

Daylight Saving Time begins March 12 at 2 a.m. DLA Installation Support at Richmond’s Fire and Emergency Services reminds employees to “spring forward” and set clocks forward by one hour. It’s also a good time to replace the batteries in all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as other safety detection devices. (DLA Aviation Public Affairs Office graphic)
