Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management Richmond’s Fire and Emergency Services is among the top departments in the country. The Commission on Fire Accreditation International unanimously recommended the department for accreditation through the Center for Public Safety Excellence after a hearing Aug. 9, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Change your clock, change your battery

As we enter the fall season, Daylight Saving Time will end at 2 a.m. this Sunday, Nov. 4. According to a National Fire Protection Association fact sheet for smoke alarms in U. S. home fires, fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate: • almost half (46 percent) of the smoke alarms had missing or disconnected batteries, • nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected smoke alarms, • dead batteries caused one-quarter (24 percent) of the smoke alarm failures, and • only seven percent of the failures were due to hardwired power source problems, including disconnected smoke alarms.
