Celebrating the Comeback of the Burning River, 1969-2019

To many, the Cuyahoga River fire on June 22, 1969 represents a turning point for environmental regulation. This river caught the attention of a nation due to excessive water pollution. Certainly not the worst, it was thrust to the forefront as a symbol of environmental degradation. With the formation of the U.S. EPA in 1970 and passage of the Clean Water Act in 1972, changes were in store for all waterways in the United States. In addition to the Clean Water Act, the Cuyahoga River was one of 43 Areas of Concern identified by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. These programs and regulations were focused on improving the lives of those both in and near the water. Now 50 years later, how is this river doing in its recovery “fueled” by local, state and federal partners?

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time,” but these words couldn’t be truer for Daniel McCombs. It was dark outside and he was focused on ensuring the safety of the witnesses. This is when he noticed the car on flames and heard someone was still inside, he immediately went into response mode – trying to figure out how to save the driver.

DPAA official talks challenges, progress in accounting for America’s missing

The Defense Federal Community commemorated Prisoner of War/Missing in Action Recognition Day Sept. 21 at the Defense Supply Center Columbus. Since 1986, the third Friday in September is set aside to remember those taken prisoner or reported missing in America’s conflicts. This year’s featured speaker was Jack Kull, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency’s Strategic Coordinator for Southeast Asia.

Three former associates inducted into the 2018 DLA Land and Maritime Hall of Fame

Three former Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime associates joined the Land and Maritime Hall of Fame at the Defense Supply Center Columbus Building 20 Auditorium May 24. Associates joined the ceremony to honor the newest members and celebrate their 110 combined years of federal service; 77 of those years at Land and Maritime and its legacy organizations.
