Local Pennsylvania Rotary Club visit to DLA Distribution highlights growth, technology

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — Much has changed since retired Army Col. George Connolly was assigned to the Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, more than 30 years ago. The agency’s role in supporting Department of Defense operations and humanitarian assistance grew dramatically beginning with Operation Desert Shield in 1990 and continued through now more than 18 years of military deployments in support of the Global War on Terror. Warehouses at the New Cumberland facility have expanded and become much more automated. Global positioning satellites now make tracking cargo more detailed than ever.

DLA Susquehanna Child Development Center tours firehouse during National Fire Prevention Week

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — It has become customary for most fire departments to visit public schools during Fire Prevention Week in order to acquaint children with the dangers of fire. For the Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management Susquehanna Fire Department, the closest thing to a school is the on-base Child Development Center, a day care and prekindergarten facility. So, 25 pre-K students were treated to a tour of the firehouse Oct. 10.

Demo of circa World War I defense building marks end of one era and beginning of another

In 1918, the U.S. Army Quartermaster Department established a depot on 851 acres of land in rural New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, based on its proximity to the Susquehanna River and Pennsylvania Railroad. Now, after 101 years of service, the last original warehouse structure from that era is being demolished.
