Industrial Hardware employees engage industry, take lessons back

Employees from the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Industrial Hardware supply chain acted as organization ambassadors, while learning more about the items they buy for warfighters at bicoastal industry engagement meetings. The IH cross-functional group of pre- and post-award acquisitions, technical/quality and supply specialists attended the International Fastener Expo Sept. 28-30 in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the Design-2-Part Show Oct. 23-24 in Oaks, Pennsylvania.

Training With Industry through DLA Troop Support: Seizing opportunity

Ursula Stewart, a contracting officer for the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Industrial Hardware supply chain, has always looked for personal and professional development opportunities. So when she had the chance to apply for the Training With Industry program, Stewart contemplated throwing her hat in the proverbial ring. When she though of applying, she didn’t realize was how challenging and enlightening the process would be in deciding if TWI was right for her. But now, as she is getting ready to depart for Amazon’s headquarters in Seattle, Washington in June, she couldn’t be more excited.

Industrial Hardware does their part to keep B-52 engines running

Imagine ordering parts for a major auto repair shop that supplies hardware to maintain engines for 76 vehicles. Although it’s 2019, the newest vehicle in the fleet was built in 1962. Each of those 76 vehicles have eight engines, and their ability to operate is critical to national security. This is a job that some of the employees at the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Industrial Hardware supply chain perform every day in supporting the sustainability of the TF33 engines that power the Air Force’s B-52 Stratofortress, the service’s self-proclaimed “backbone of the manned strategic bomber force,” according to the Air Force’s B-52 fact sheet.

Finding balance at the summit: Troop Support employee climbs Kilimanjaro

Not many people can claim that they have danced with an African tribe, climbed to the top of the highest peak in Africa and watched a sunset from above the clouds. But thanks to an adventurous spirit and a supportive workplace, Jeff Crow can make that claim. Crow, a material planner in the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Industrial Hardware supply chain and avid trekker from Colorado, decided he needed to take a trip to provide stability to his work-life balance - and a tropical vacation wasn’t going to do the trick. He needed a challenge. He was going to climb Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro - one of the “Seven Summits,” which are the highest peaks on each of Earth’s continents.

Reorganizing for employee development, future success

For new employees, “learning the ropes” can be a challenge. So leaders in the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Industrial Hardware supply chain found a way to help set up certain new employees for success. Developed in 2018, the IH Material Planning training branch took a cue from IH’s Technical and Quality Division and helped standardize training and “build the bench” of more skilled, knowledgeable interns and employees in the Pathways to Career Excellence program, or PaCErs.
