Filled liquid oxygen carts are ready for pick-up at the 673d Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels facilities section at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Dec. 4, 2017. Oxygen is pressurized and cooled into a liquid state in order to transport it more efficiently from cryogenic tanks to JBER’s aircraft to provide fresh air to pilots in flight.

If unprepared, permanent damage to vital organs can happen within minutes. To prevent this, aircrew rely upon liquid oxygen.

Cooler Than Cool, LRS Airmen produce liquid oxygen at Andersen

ANDERSEN AIR FORCE BASE, Guam — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the Andersen Air Force Base website — The U.S. Air Force has two cryogenics production plants, one of which is on Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. For the last year however, the plant has been closed while undergoing repairs to be more energy efficient and bring it to mission capable status.

KADENA AIR BASE, Japan — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the Kadena Air Base website — A cold brew at work sounds like something a supervisor wouldn’t get behind. In a few shops, however, a nice frosty one isn’t just encouraged, it’s required. The 18th Logistics Readiness Squadron opened a cryogenic production plant June 16, 2017, to increase the supply of liquid nitrogen and oxygen available to shops that rely on those chilly fluids.

Serving again: Prior POL troops continue to fuel airpower in Afghanistan

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the 455th Air Expeditionary Wing website — The 455th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness Squadron fuels management section, commonly referred to as POL, enables Resolute Support and Operation Freedom’s Sentinel by supplying all aircraft, to include military, contracted and civilian, with the fuel needed to deliver airpower.
