Shaping The Future of 3-D Printing

Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the 1st Marine Logistics Group website — Additive manufacturing, more commonly known as 3-D printing, has been a one of the Marine Corps' recent endeavors to eliminate the wait time it takes to receive parts for essential equipment; turning potentially months of waiting into just a few days, and ensuring Marines will be ready when duty calls.

Several 3-D-printed assault vehicle models sit on display in the General Support Maintenance Company (GSM), 3rd Maintenance Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, as a display of advanced capabilities, Nov. 21 2017, at Camp Kinser, Okinawa, Japan. The Dreamer Flashforge 3-D printer is regularly used at GSM to test form, fit and functionality of equipment and military systems before the finished product is produced out of metal.

The X-FAB, or Expeditionary Fabrication, Facility is a self-contained, transportable additive manufacturing lab comprised of a 20-by-20-foot shelter, 3-D printers, a scanner and computer-aided design software system that can be used to fabricate repair and replacement parts in the field. Corps explores deploying 3D mobile fab labs

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the Marine Corps Systems Command website — The Marine Corps is looking to make additive manufacturing as expeditionary as the operating forces using it. The X-FAB—which stands for expeditionary fabrication—facility is a self-contained, transportable additive manufacturing lab that can deploy with battalion-level Marine maintenance units.

Graduate school unveils new 3D metal printer

MAXWELL AIR FORCE BASE, Ala. — Logistics In Action: Article originally appeared on the Maxwell Air Force Base website — The Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base has been utilizing additive manufacturing, also known as 3D printing, to build prototypes with polymers for more than 30 years. On March 16, its Graduate School of Engineering and Management unveiled a new state-of-the-art metal additive manufacturing system that enables AFIT to digitally fabricate aerospace metal parts.
