First American to escape al-Qaida shares story of captivity

Matthew Schrier, the first Westerner to escape from al-Qaida captivity, shared his story of imprisonment and shed light on the behavioral tendencies of Islamic extremists during a 9/11 remembrance event at the McNamara Headquarters Complex Sept. 11.

Hurricane Florence: How to plan for a quick and safe evacuation

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — The National Weather Service is forecasting that Hurricane Florence will bring a life-threatening storm surge and rainfall to portions of the Carolinas and mid-Atlantic states, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has declared Wednesday, September 12 as the last “good” evacuation day prior to the storm’s landfall.

Distribution town hall focuses on getting “back to the basics”

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — True to his word, DLA Distribution commanding officer Navy Supply Corps Rear Adm. Kevin Jones held his second Distribution town hall in as many months on Aug. 30. The event focused on getting “back to the basics:” two-way communication, greater concentration on safety and security, planning and resourcing, building a learning culture of basic problem solving, managing, developing and mentoring people and managing performance.

Exercise tests first responders, HQC workforce in reacting to shooter, bomber

A Sept. 6 exercise at the McNamara Headquarters Complex tested the readiness of first responders, along with the workforce of DLA and other HQC agencies, as they responded to a mock event involving about 100 volunteer actors, police officers and others.

Distribution deputy counsel retires after 39 years of service

NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. — “One of the most experienced and knowledgeable personnel, not just within Distribution, but across DLA” is how DLA Distribution deputy commander Twila Gonzales, Senior Executive Service, described deputy chief counsel John Fritz at his August 21 retirement ceremony celebrating his 39 years of service to the federal government.

The historic Defense Fuel Support Point Yorktown fuel terminal in Virginia has 10 underground tanks used to store F24 and JP8 jet fuel. The cut-and-cover tanks, built in 1953, were demolished in 2015 along with the removal of pier piping and equipment. Soil testing and surveys will be conducted at DFSP Yorktown to prepare the land for future use.
