As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, many are excited to see the fireworks show sparkling in color across the dark skies. It’s a beautiful sight that many try to duplicate in their backyards, parks and sometimes in neighborhood streets. Designated smoking areas will be at least 50 feet from building entrances and air intake ducts and will not be located in areas commonly used by nonsmokers.

Emergency 9-1-1 Campaign: What everyone should know

Defense Logistics Agency Richmond Fire and Emergency Services Division will kick off its 2019 Emergency 9-1-1 campaign May 20 and it will run through May 24. This year’s theme is “What Everyone Should Know About 9-1-1.” It’s an effort to educate the Defense Supply Center Richmond community about the Enhanced 9-1-1 system, which routes an emergency call to the appropriate 911 answering point for the caller's location and automatically displays the caller's phone number and address.

Emergency response terms explained

Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia, conducted a tornado response exercise March 19. During the exercise, the installation’s mass notification system disseminated the message that included the words “seek shelter.” Participants’ post-exercise comments indicated confusion with respect to the meaning of “seek shelter,” which is different from “shelter-in-place” or “lockdown.”
