Fire Prevention Week: Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire can happen anywhere.

Fire Prevention Week was Oct. 7 - 13. It was first established in 1922. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge issued the first proclamation for fire prevention week, making it a national observance. DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services recognizes the importance of fire prevention and fire safety education. FES holds several specialized events each year during fire prevention week.

DSCC associate saves life on commute home

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time,” but these words couldn’t be truer for Daniel McCombs. It was dark outside and he was focused on ensuring the safety of the witnesses. This is when he noticed the car on flames and heard someone was still inside, he immediately went into response mode – trying to figure out how to save the driver.

The Defense Supply Center Columbus completed a number of activities during National Preparedness Month. DSCC’s goal was to provide information to installation employees to make them better prepared for emergencies at home, at work and in the community.

The Sept. 26 Child Development Center informational booth was part of a series of informational booths held around the installation in September to raise awareness about being prepared for emergencies.

Local county emergency alert - Information on how to sign up

As part of National Preparedness Month, all personnel are encouraged to sign up for Local County Alerts for the county they reside and work. These systems are used to alert users of a terrorist situation, an emergency in a suburb, weather alerts or any emergency. Links to Franklin and surrounding counties to sign-up to receive alerts are listed below.
