Aeronautical Map Products

Aeronautical charts are specialized representations of mapped features of the earth. They are produced to show selected terrain, cultural, and hydrographic features, and supplemental information required for air navigation, pilotage, or planning air operations. These charts are also referred to as navigation charts. Standard Aeronautical products support military flying activities at all elevations from satellite orbits to tree-top level, and support downed fliers and HQ-level ground personnel. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

There are a number of Federal Aviation Administration related products available that contain important aeronautical information. Some are not necessarily required to accomplish operational missions, but are likely instruments useful for mission preparation and support.

Due to the limited shelf stock and the unavailability of reprints, FAATP products will be managed and stocked as "Fill" or "Kill" only. The best means of receiving FAA publications is via subscription/Automatic Distribution (AD). When ordering or requesting products for AD, use the based publication NRN only. Change notices and new publications are forwarded based on the basic publication.

The date and edition of FAA publications are very important. Referring to obsolete information may be dangerous. Critical changes occur constantly. To ensure current and accurate information is maintained, you can reference the FAA Aviation System Standards Downloads for various products.

Flight Information Publications (FLIP)

Flight Information Publications (FLIP) charts are sensitive flight critical mapping and charting type items produced by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA), foreign governments and commercial vendors that are distributed by the Defense Distribution Mapping (DDM) and varied civilian contractors. They are available for most parts of the world, including Africa, Asia, and Antarctica. Each set of maps provide information needed for flying in foreign airspace.

There are three standard types of Flight Information Publications (Planning, Enroute and Terminal) that cover eight geographic areas throughout the world. These items are produced in increments varying from 28 to 365 days. Enough of each product type are produced and printed to adequately supply all active subscription accounts and limited depot shelf stock.

Flight Information Publications - Related (FLIPR)

There are a number of Flight Information Related Products that contain important aeronautical information. Some are not necessarily required to accomplish operational missions, but are likely instruments useful for mission preparation and support.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is the most commonly known producer and distributor of U.S. aeronautical charts. Domestic aeronautical charts and related publications can be obtain from the FAA distribution center and through a network of various sales agents. A free publication, Aeronautical Charts and Related Products, includes a list of dealers, and descriptions of the charts and publications distributed by the FAA.

The date of an aeronautical chart is important. Critical changes occur constantly, and it is important for users to have up-to-date charts. To ensure that only the latest charts are used, FAA publishes Dates of Latest Edition, available free from FAA distribution centers and sales agents.

Some aeronautical FLIPR charts are distributed by the Richmond Map Facility (RMF). Those stock numbers can be obtained via the NGA Reference Number/National Stock Number (NRN/NSN) Lookup.

Non-Department of Defense (DOD) Flight Publications

Non-DOD FLIP products are produced by commercial or foreign organizations (i.e., Jeppersen, RAF) and are not cataloged by the Defense Logistics Information Service (DLIS), nor managed by the Defense Supply Center Richmond-Mapping Customer Operations.

Non-DOD FLIP products are usually substituted for DOD FLIP products because the required coverage does not exist or does not contain critical information that is available on the non-DOD FLIP products.  For more information, please contact the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency at 636-321-5270 or DSN 369-5270.

Foreign Clearance Guides (FCG) and Classified Supplement (FCGCS)

The unclassified DOD Foreign Clearance Guide products are currently available online at the Foreign Clearance Guide web site. The Foreign Clearance Guide Office has asked that customers validate the number of hard copies received and the number necessary to complete mission requirements. Please contact their office after reviewing your current requirements and provide justification of your current need for the hard copy format.

Evasion Charts (EVC)

The Evasion chart is a survival aid designed to assist an evader in ground navigation and basic survival reference. It is distributed to aviation and ground personnel, and is typically a standard evasion and escape kit item.

An EVC chart is intended for use in survival/evasion situations, and is not intended to replace Joint Operations Graphic-Air Chart for air operations and planning, as aeronautical information is not maintained to the same currency required for a Joint Operations Graphic Air Chart.

The EVC chart is a composite chart, with both graphic and text information. It is folded for stowage in flight suits, survival vest, or survival kits.

Global Navigation Charts (GNC)

The Global Navigation Chart supports air operations requiring long range, high speed, high altitude aerospace navigation; specifically, transports, tankers, and long-range bombers.

Primary information on the GNC identifies vertical obstructions to flight, aid navigation features, and landing options.

Jet Navigation Chart (JNC)

The primary purpose of the Jet Navigation Chart is to support high-altitude computer assisted radar navigation/bombing by strategic aircraft.

Information considerations are selected to support celestial, radar, and dead reckoning navigation.

Joint Operations Graphic (JOG)

The Joint Operations Graphic-Air is an aeronautical chart for international and joint service air/ground tactical operations that focuses on identifying horizontal control points and low altitude air navigation hazards.

The JOG-A is used for tactical air support/assault missions with ground forces and is printed on a Mercator projection. Ground units commonly use the JOG-A as a strategic/operational map to complement the 1:50,000 topographic line map.

Operational Navigation Chart (ONC)

The Operational Navigation Chart is the standard worldwide small-scale aeronautical chart. It is designed for medium altitude (2,000 to 25,000 feet above ground level), high-speed, visual and radar navigation. It is the source for navigational filmstrips and cockpit/visual display products.

The ONC satisfies enroute visual and radar navigation in the absence of Tactical Pilotage Charts. It supports the requirements for low-altitude operations such as dead reckoning, radar, and celestial navigation.

Tactical Pilot Chart (TPC)

The Tactical Pilot Chart supports high-speed, low-altitude radar, and visual navigation of high-performance tactical and reconnaissance aircraft from low to medium altitudes. It is designed to assist close-air operations by providing visual and radar navigation information. A knowledge of map symbology becomes important to understand cultural features depicted on the chart.
