Sustainability and Hazardous Minimization (HAZMIN) Programs

DoD defines Sustainability as “the capacity to continue the mission without compromise. It is the ability to operate into the future without decline – either in the mission or the natural and man-made systems that support it.”

DLA Aviation’s Hazardous Minimization (HAZMIN) and Green Products Program was established at Richmond, VA to support DoD’s overall Sustainability Policy issued in 2010. The DLA HAZMIN and Green Products team under the Aviation Supply Chain’s Engineering Directorate has the mission to support DoD’s Sustainability Policy by helping DLA’s military customers to ‘Buy Green.' The team provides technical assistance and logistics guidance to its military service customers with respect to Pollution Prevention Programs, Green Products, and overall sustainability issues.DLA green product development diagram

Examples include:

  • Recycled content products
  • Less toxic and low VOC products
  • Energy and water-conserving products
  • Bio-based products
  • Alternatives to hazardous items such as lead, mercury and cadmium

HAZMIN & Green Products

DLA Aviation's HAZMIN and Green Products Team supports DoD's Sustainability Policy by helping the military services 'Buy Green'. The team provides technical assistance and logistics guidance to its military customers with respect to Pollution Prevention, Green Products and overall sustainability issues.

We assist our Military Service partners in evaluating and demonstrating new products which the Services believe will provide most beneficial from an ESOH, sustainability and performance perspective on specified weapon systems. New product vendors should deal with the Military Services. If the product meets the needs of a Military component, that component is responsible for the product’s induction into the government-wide supply system.
