Medical supply chain sweeps DLA Troop Support annual awards

The Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical team is walking a little taller after sweeping the organization’s three major annual award categories in recognition of their support to the nation in 2021. The awards recognized Thomas Heleniak, Medical Tailored Vendor Logistics Specialist, as Employee of the Year; the Operation Allies Welcome/Refuge group as Team of the Year; and Nora Steigerwalt, director of Customer Operations, as the Supervisor of the Year.

DLA Troop Support member, team recognized for excellence

An acquisition specialist with Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Medical’s National Contracts team and the organization’s J3/5 Operations and Plans Weapon System Readiness Support Branch, were recognized for their accomplishments in fiscal year 2021 fourth quarter. Ryan Ferry was selected as DLA’s Employee of the Quarter and the J3/5 team was recognized for their contributions towards DLA Strategic Goals. The recognition period for the awards was July 1 through Sept. 31, 2021, and award selections were announced Dec. 2021.

Continuous Process Improvement project improves efficiencies, effectiveness of new employees and teams

What are the organizational impacts of new employee onboarding delays, and how can the processes improve? That is exactly the question the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Continuous Process Improvement team asked in 2018, and ultimately answered December 2021. Six projects and a little more than two years later, the impacts are an estimated $2.7 million in cost offsets over a three-year period, and several weeks of productivity per new employee, CPI Branch Chief Maximo Ayala-Ortiz said.

DLA supports local COVID-19 surge testing in southwest Philly

As Southwest Philadelphians line up at the opening of a new federal COVID-19 surge testing site at the Cibotti Recreation Center on 77th Street this afternoon, employees of the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support can be proud that their hard work is supporting communities in the local area. DLA Troop Support fulfilled the request for 1,000 surgical masks, 2,000 KN95 masks and 80,000 nitrile gloves January 5, just one day after receiving the request for support, according to the organization’s Whole of Government Division Chief Dorothy O’Connell.

DLA Troop Support Europe and Africa employees and families build overseas morale with Turkey Trot

Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Europe and Africa hosted a “Turkey Trot” 5K run and 3K walk November 19, 2021, for employees and families living in the local Kaiserslautern area. The event was held on nature trails near Kleber Kaserne to promote team building and increase morale prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday. Prizes were awarded for the fastest run time and the best costume.

DLA Troop Support Europe and Africa team demonstrates subsistence excellence in support of USS Hershel "Woody" Williams

Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support Europe and Africa provided operational subsistence support to the USS Hershel “Woody” Williams from August 10 to November 1 this year. Packages were delivered during four port calls in Accra, Ghana; Bradbury, Angola; Cape Town, South Africa; and Cotati, Seychelles.

DLA Troop Support enhances training through technology, innovation

Leaders from the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support’s Training Academy and DLA Information Operations, are delivering a more immersive educational experience to employees starting this week. Harnessing a combination of existing collaboration tools and a newly implemented open-source training software, instructors will provide “on-the-job,” on-demand training to meet the needs of geographically distributed employees in need of more localized training than other systems provide. “This will create a ‘ground level’ view of systems and tasks we do here at Troop Support,” Training Academy lead Joanne Anello said.

DLA, Navy Surgeon General discuss COVID-19, medical logistics

COVID-19 and medical logistics were key topics of discussion between the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support leaders and Navy Surgeon General Read Adm. Bruce Gillingham during a visit Oct. 20 in Philadelphia. Both sides of the table provided feedback on current and future challenges, as well as how to best partner to overcome them.

DLA lab tests 3D scanner to inform agency use, improve coordination with partners

A 3D scanner, delivered to the Defense Logistics Troop Support Product Test Center the week of October 11, is undergoing testing to explore how the technology can improve agency operations. The machine may also help the PTC coordinate with customers, vendors and DLA teammates to better visualize parts and potential defects.

DLA provides food, medicine to incoming Afghans in support of Operation Allies Welcome

The Defense Logistics Agency provided more than $42 million worth of food and nearly 448,000 doses of 15 different vaccines to Afghan nationals in support of Operation Allies Welcome over the past three months, while standing by to provide additional assistance to U.S. Northern Command and other mission partners.
