Members of the DLA Europe & Africa team in Kaiserslautern, Germany, ran and walked at least 2.45 miles this weekend to celebrate 245 years of the Army defending and protecting the United States.

Living his dream

Two weeks after his high school graduation in June 1965, George Tyras joined the United States Air Force and became an aircraft fueling operator in U-Tapao, Thailand, servicing KC-135 and B-52 aircraft from Vietnam. Operation Rolling Thunder was underway and gas was 31 cents a gallon. Fifty-four years later, Tyras is ending his career with more than 54 years of total federal service.

America’s Army: When We are Needed, We are There

Let us all join in a moment of reflection and celebration in honor of the U.S. Army’s 245th Birthday, which was celebrated on Sunday, June 14. The U.S. Army was officially created on June 14, 1775, over a year prior to the Declaration of Independence, when Congress approved the raising of six companies of riflemen to enlist in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia until the end of the Revolutionary War. The Army has grown in size and capability since its humble beginnings in the nation’s struggle for independence against Great Britain and is now the largest branch of the U.S. military.

DLA Distribution Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, won the Brig. Gen. Barbara Doornink DLA Distribution center (large) of the year award. Through understaffing issues and accountability audits, they maintained a direct support to the warfighter that saw outstanding effort and regularly exceeding requirements.

June 12, 2020 the first Women Veterans Day in Ohio

June 12, 2020 is the first time Ohio honors it women veterans. On Dec. 13, 2019 Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed Senate Bill 77 into law designating June 12 as Woman Veterans Day, honoring women who have served in the military.

Virtual New Employee Orientation Session

It was the first day of the New Employee Orientation and a new adventure for both the employees and the orientation presenters. The Coronavirus Pandemic challenged the People and Culture Office to continue providing new employees the same experience as they would at the in-house sessions. The first, and probably not last, Virtual New NEO was held May 20 and 21, 2020.

From clerk typist to SES, Gonzales retires from DLA Distribution with 40 years of federal service

Over 40 years ago, while still in college, Twila Coleen Gonzales, Senior Executive Service, embarked on a remarkable journey. The journey began in her native state, California, with her first federal position as a GS-01 clerk typist at the former Sharpe Army Depot — now part of Defense Logistics Agency Distribution San Joaquin, California. Gonzales rose through the ranks from clerk typist, concluding her 40 year federal career at the SES level as deputy commander of DLA Distribution.

Many Americans will continue a 104-year-old tradition June 14 when they celebrate Flag Day to show respect for the Star Spangled Banner, something Defense Logistics Agency employees do year round.
