DLA commanders meet to discuss Agency’s procurement challenges, solutions

DLA Land and Maritime Commander Navy Rear Adm. John Palmer and his senior staff hosted DLA Distribution Commander Navy Rear Adm. Kevin Jones May 3 in Columbus, Ohio, for an orientation visit to discuss business operations. Their meeting was part of an Agency-wide initiative to generate increased conversation between supply chains on shared logistics, operating challenges and successes.

Five-Alarm Achievement: Rodgers makes history as first DLA firefighter to enter DoD Firefighter Hall of Fame

It only took a spark, but the blaze of a career built by Fire Chief Don Rodgers, Fire and Emergency Branch, Security and Emergency Services Division, Defense Logistics Agency Installation Management Richmond, has also served to illuminate his many achievements. Rodgers made local history May 3, when he became the first DLA firefighter to be inducted into the 2019 Department of Defense Firefighters Hall of Fame.

DLA Aviation parts support ensures tankers available for aerial refueling mission

The Air Force’s aerial refueling capability recently expanded with the delivery of the KC-46A Pegasus aircraft to McConnell Air Force Base, Wichita, Kansas, in January. Bill Knepshield has been working to ensure Defense Logistics Agency has parts support in place for the Pegasus since early 2014.

DLA Land and Maritime has an office dedicated to providing training, advice, guidance and strategies to small businesses that are looking to do business with the government. The office also focuses on developing and implementing strategies that increase business opportunities for the various socioeconomic categories: service-disabled veteran-owned, woman-owned, small disadvantaged and HUBZone small businesses.

The next generation learns about DLA

Kids got to see first-hand how DLA Land and Maritime associates often have to adapt to changing requirements when the weather required other plans for Take Your Kid to Work Day activities April 25. DLA Land and Maritime associates and their children gathered in the auditorium, many were excited to be on the installation for the first time, others curious as to what happens at their parents or grandparents work place, but a consensus from all were they were happier to be here with their loved ones rather than at school.

DLA Portsmouth associates participate in Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month activities

DLA Land and Maritime Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Coordinator Shari Murnahan and Penny Copp, an Equal Employment Office specialist, visited DLA Portsmouth in New Hampshire April 24. The visit focused on providing information and resources to Portsmouth associates through in-person training sessions, leadership and community partner updates and a Walk-a-Lap awareness event.

Bringing your landscape to life!

When the first settlers came to North America they brought with them plants from their homeland that they knew and loved. The daffodils, foxgloves and day lilies became known as ‘ornamentals’ and the native plants became stigmatized as ‘weeds’ because they were plentiful. This tradition has continued to the present day. However, the native plants have evolved alongside the birds, butterflies and other native wildlife for centuries.

Harvellia Thomas, known to her coworkers as Harvey, retires after 30 years of government service April 30. She started her civil service career at Ft. Knox as a recreation assistant with the MWR Fitness Center, then transferred to DSCC where she developed quite a following for her fitness classes.
