DLA personnel join counterparts to help save lives of civilians fleeing war, atrocities in Middle East

Defense Logistics Agency personnel recently helped save numerous civilian lives by delivering millions of critical non-food items to refugees and migrants in the Middle East before the arrival of winter, in collaboration with other federal agencies.

DLA provides range of services to support the warfighter

Bagram Airfield, Afghanistan — When it comes to supporting the warfighter across the Combined Joint Operations Area-Afghanistan, no organization does it better than the Defense Logistics Agency.

Subsistence helps Army Spec Ops nutrition program

PHILADELPHIA — When the U.S. Army Special Operations Command decided to add the nutrition element of a human performance program to the menu at a Fort Bragg dining facility, they asked the Subsistence supply chain to help.

In front of family members, friends and co-workers, the Stephen F. Byus Community Center was dedicated Jan. 21 during a ceremony on the installation. Suzanna Byus, Stephen's mother, and Navy Rear Adm. John King, DLA Land and Maritime commander, unveil the plaque that will be permanently displayed inside the center.

Former DLA Disposition Services deployer memorialized

Columbus, Ohio — A building at DLA Land and Maritime in Columbus, Ohio, has been named in honor of the late Stephen F. Byus, who was killed in action in 2014. Byus deployed twice to Southwest Asia as a mobilized Navy Reserve sailor serving with DLA Disposition Services.

What DLA Disposition Services Really Does

Lansing, Michigan — A cargo truck once used by the military finds new life as a firefighting vehicle for the Michigan Department of Natural Resources thanks to the mission of DLA Disposition Services.

New Army recruits receive updated operational camouflage pattern Army combat uniforms and accessories at Fort Benning, Georgia, Dec. 20. Approximately 1,300 recruits at Fort Benning have already been issued the fiscal year 2016 clothing bag, which includes OCP ACUs and accessories.

Recruits receive new Army uniforms as rollout continues

PHILADELPHIA — Army recruits will now join soldiers already wearing the Operational Camouflage Pattern as the rollout of the new Army Combat Uniform continues.

The USS Forrest Sherman, a former Navy destroyer, sits in a trench in New Orleans in October. The ship is the first scrapped through a Defense Logistics Agency contract since the late 1990s.

DLA Disposition Services scraps decommissioned ship

New Orleans, Louisiana — A chapter in Navy and DLA Disposition Services history is ending in a trench dug off New Orleans’ Industrial Canal, less than three miles from the French Quarter.

A former Army 5-ton tractor truck acquired by the Torrance County, New Mexico Sheriff’s Department through the DLA Law Enforcement Support Office waits for its next mission Dec. 26. Repurposed with a snowplow, the rig was used to reach isolated rural residents of the county in the wake of heavy snow from Winter Storm Goliath.

Stranded travelers, snowbound residents benefit from ex-military gear

Albuquerque, New Mexico — DLA recently helped local communities deal with emergency snowfall by providing excess military equipment donated by DoD through the Law Enforcement Support Office program.

The Ch-46 and V-22 Osprey begins there landing during the CH-46 Retirement Ceremony at the Smithsonian Institution National Air and Space Museum’s Steven Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, Virginia Aug. 1, 2015. The ceremony was conducted by Marines from Medium Helicopter Squadron 774 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Forces Reserve, and Marines from Marine Helicopter Squadron One from Marine Corps base Quantico, Virginia.

Big trucks bring big boxes, big bucks saved

December 16, 2015 — DLA Disposition Services has been a Santa facilitator, ensuring some big boxes got delivered to Marines in Virginia a week before Santa makes his normal rounds.

Unit conducts valuable training while helping reduce backlog

Jacksonville, Florida — Members of Disposition Services Unit Six of Jacksonville, Florida, used their December drill dates too not only complete the Defense Logistics Agency’s Joint Incremental Duty Training, or “JIDT Block II,” but also to help the local DLA Disposition Services site catch up on demilitarization and avoid shipping items to Alabama for the required work.

DLA delivers Christmas cheer to deployed service members

Service members deployed this Christmas will still enjoy a traditional holiday meal with all the trimmings, thanks to Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support.

The aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) departs Naval Base Coronado enroute to Norfolk, Va., to begin a refueling complex overhaul period. DLA delivered more than a million pounds of food to three South American countries for the GW to resupply during its voyage from San Diego to Norfolk, Virginia.

DLA delivers food for historic USS George Washington voyage

PHILADELPHIA — The Navy contacted DLA to order food delivery like ordering pepperoni pies from your favorite pizza place. But it certainly took longer than 30 minutes to deliver more than a million pounds of food to three countries along the route of the GW's historic voyage around South America.

A former Navy utility boat arrives in New London, Connecticut, via tractor-trailer Nov. 30. Two surplus boats will be used to ferry passengers between historical sites along the Thames River as part of the new "Thames River Heritage Park" effort there.
