DLA Distribution San Joaquin, California is DoD’s western Strategic Distribution Platform and DLA’s primary distribution point to the western United States, Pacific and Indian Ocean regions.  The distribution center coordinates global materiel distribution and other logistics activities in support of U.S. forces worldwide.  We warehouse and manage assigned DLA and Service materiel and we optimize downstream supply chain activities in order to deliver what the warfighter needs on time. The Distribution Center stores over 383,000 different stock numbers valued at over $7.8 billion.  In FY 2017 alone, 1.5 million line items valued at $3.7 billion were shipped to customers around the world.

The depot originated in 1942 as part of the Army’s Quartermaster system and has supported every major war and many contingency operations over the past seven decades from World War II to the current operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as several humanitarian relief efforts around the world.  Today, DLA Distribution San Joaquin is the second largest of 25 distribution centers subordinate to DLA Distribution, headquartered in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.

Warfighters overseas in the Pacific and Indian Ocean regions are supported through DLA Distribution San Joaquin’s Consolidation and Containerization Point (CCP), which operates much like a cross-docking, freight-forwarding business, consolidating freight into seagoing vans or onto special air pallets for shipment to overseas customers.   Items from other distribution centers, government agencies and independent vendors account for approximately 25 percent of the materiel shipped from the CCP with the remainder coming from DLA Distribution San Joaquin’s mission stock.   On a monthly average, the CCP will ship more than 350 seavans and nearly 150 air pallets to 4,000 customers stationed in Alaska or the Pacific and Indian Ocean operating areas.  Support is tailored to each customer unit’s individual requirements.

The Dedicated Truck Program serves CONUS customers and features customized delivery schedules, reduced transit times and items packed to suit the warfighter which results in reduced transportation costs and enhanced partnerships with customers and freight carriers.  More than one-third of the depot’s shipments are transported on dedicated trucks. Customers on the west coast receive deliveries same day or overnight, while customers as far away as Pennsylvania can be supported in 72 hours.  This process serves the warfighter, as well as those who support the warfighter.  By arranging scheduled deliveries, our customers know how to staff their organizations accordingly for incoming freight.  Conversely, DLA Distribution San Joaquin is afforded the same luxury, as we know when the trucks are scheduled to arrive to pick up freight, to the day and the hour, and can plan staffing to that schedule.  Definitely a win-win effort that supports both parties and is a service that has become very important to our customer base.

DLA Distribution San Joaquin also assembles sets and kits and is the sole provider of the Unitized Group Rations (UGR), these are heat and serve meals that are used to sustain our globally deployed warfighters. The different types of meals that are assembled are the UGR-M and UGRHeat and Serve meals.  The UGR-M and Heat and Serve meals feed 50 warfighters at one time and require a field kitchen.

DLA Distribution San Joaquin was awarded the prestigious 2018 Commander in Chief’s Installation Excellence Award. Further, the distribution center was awarded the 2017 Phyllis C. Campbell Award for Superior Performance, DLA Distribution Center of the Year, and was recognized as the Distribution Center of Excellence. Team awards included Employee Safety/VPP for the Media and Marketing Support Committee; EEO Team Award for the Civilian Welfare Fund Council; and the Large Team Performance of the Year for the Transportation Division. Lastly, 10 stellar employees received personal Global Distribution Excellence Awards.

There are six DLA organizations that make up Defense Distribution Depot San Joaquin.  They are Installation Operations, Information Operations, Transaction Services, Disposition Services, DLA Training, and Document Services.  Together, DLA Distribution and these organizations received OSHA’s Star Site Designation on July 13, 2011 and recertified on May 11, 2016 as a national Voluntary Protective Program participant.  San Joaquin is the first DLA industrial site to receive this prestigious designation.  San Joaquin is the 38th organization in the Department of Defense and the 13th in OSHA’s Region 9 (California, Arizona, Hawaii and Nevada) to be recognized with this high honor.  This accomplishment was reached through the cohesive “whole-of-agency” team, known locally under the “One Site – One Flag – One Team” marque.  Being a multi-site, DLA-owned base, San Joaquin’s mission and daily operations are much like running a small city around a big distribution center, with our own fire and police departments, waste water treatment plant, and facility and equipment maintenance supporting our warehousing, assembly, kitting, and international distribution missions.

TEAM San Joaquin is very proud of our support to the warfighter.  We take our responsibility as a Strategic Distribution Platform, supporting the whole of the Department of Defense and the interagency governmental mix of customers and support requirements, very personally.
