About Distribution Puget Sound
DLA Distribution Puget Sound, Wash., is located in Bremerton, Wash., in the northwest portion of the state. Puget Sound is a tenant command on Naval Base Kitsap and located next to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility and several other Navy activities. The distribution center is situated on the Sinclair inlet; part of the Puget Sound to the west of Seattle and northwest of Tacoma. Both Seattle and Tacoma are located just across Puget Sound and within fifty miles as are other major Department of Defense activities such as Joint Base Lewis McChord (Army/Air Force). Airline passenger and cargo service is provided by Sea-Tac International Airport which is situated between Seattle and Tacoma. Over ocean cargo service is provided through the Port of Tacoma.
DLA Distribution Puget Sound evolved from the Physical Distribution Department of what was then known as the Naval Supply Center Puget Sound in March of 1992 when the mission was transferred from the Navy to the Defense Logistics Agency under the Defense Management Review Decision 902. Further growth took place during the transfer of Storage and Distribution functions from DLA Land and Maritime to DLA Distribution in October 2013.
Serving as a forward distribution point for DLA and Service-owned material, Puget Sound has more than 180,000 line items valued at more than $860 million stored in warehouses and various open air storage locations across three geographically separate locations at Bremerton, Bangor and Everett, Wash.
Puget Sound supports primarily local, but also worldwide customers. The center is able to provide immediate support to industrial and war fighting customers, as well as, to disaster relief efforts. Direct support is provided for the various home-ported and transient ships in the Pacific Northwest, including air craft carriers, submarines and supply ships.
Puget Sound is the U. S. Navy's second largest shipyard and intermediate repair facility and the only one of its kind on the West coast. Our employees receive and ship materiel consisting of a variety of products, ranging from 200,000 pound ships propulsion shafts to miniature electronic components and support manpower requirements in Washington, San Diego, Guam and Japan. The distribution center is best known for its Nuclear Propulsion and Submarine materiel support. The work is often fast-paced with Puget Sound serving as the support center for ships preparing for deployment to various areas of the Pacific and Middle East.
